How to Pay a Sunrise Traffic Ticket

Paying your fine is the fastest way to close a Sunrise traffic case. It counts as a guilty plea. Moving violations put points on your license. Under Florida Statute 318.18, standard moving violations cost $60 before court costs get added. Nonmoving tickets start at $30. Speeding fines depend on how far over the limit you were going: 6 to 9 mph over is $25, 10 to 14 is $100, 15 to 19 is $150, 20 to 29 is $175, and 30 or more over is $250. School zone and construction zone fines are doubled.

Several payment methods are available. Pay online at browardclerk.org or use the PayFLClerk statewide portal. Select Broward County from the list. A processing fee applies to all card payments. You can pay by phone at (954) 831-6565. To mail payment, send a check or money order to P.O. Box 14610, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33302-4610. Cash payments at any AMSCOT location in Florida have no extra clerk fee. In person, visit the Traffic West branch in Plantation or any other Broward Clerk branch.

If you need time to pay, ask about a payment plan. You must go in person to set one up. There is a $25 processing fee. Plan payments can be made by mail or in person only.

Sunrise Traffic Citation Response Options

Three paths are open to you. Each affects your driving record differently.

Paying the fine closes things out. It is simple but it means accepting the charge. Points hit your record for moving violations. Nonmoving tickets carry no points but still need to be paid within 30 days. The total due is on the back of your citation.

Contesting the ticket is the second option. Contact the Broward Clerk within 30 days to request a hearing date. Both you and the officer appear before a judge. If found guilty, the fine can go up to $500. School zone and construction zone violations can reach $1,000. A conditional plea of no contest is also available for eligible citations that did not involve a crash. Email TrafficeClerk@browardclerk.org to file it. No court appearance needed, and no points on your record.

Traffic school is the third path. See below for details on how it works for Sunrise drivers.

Traffic School for Sunrise Residents

Electing a Basic Driver Improvement course keeps points off your license. You get an 18% cut in the fine. The Broward Clerk withholds adjudication, meaning no conviction goes on your record. Contact the clerk within 30 days of receiving the citation to elect this option. Then complete the course within 90 days of the violation date.

Limits apply. You can only use traffic school five times in your lifetime. Once every 12 months at most. CDL holders are not eligible. Neither are drivers caught doing 30 mph or more over the speed limit. Failing to finish the course on time means you face the full fine, a late fee, and points on your record. A suspension may follow. Find state-approved courses at the FLHSMV approved schools page. Most providers offer online courses you can do from home.

After completing the course, verify that the Broward Clerk received your certificate. Call (954) 831-6565 to check. Do not rely on the school to send it for you.

License Suspension Risks

Not responding to a Sunrise traffic ticket can cost you your license. Under Florida Statute 318.15, missing the 30-day deadline triggers a $16 late fee. If 180 days pass with no action, the Broward Clerk notifies the FLHSMV. Your license gets suspended. Getting it back requires paying all fines, late fees, and a $60 reinstatement charge to the state. That suspension stays on your record for seven years.

Points from Sunrise tickets stack with points from other Florida cities. Twelve points in 12 months gets a 30-day suspension. Eighteen points in 18 months means a 3-month suspension. Twenty-four points in 36 months leads to a full year. Monitor your point total through the MyDMV Portal.
